Michelle's journey as an artist began at an early age with her passion for sewing. She used fabrics and patterns as her initial canvases and put her creativity toward form and color combinations. With her eye for detail, she naturally moved on to Interior Design and assisted many clients and friends with home elements of decoration and design. When she took an introductory class in oil painting, it was the start of a new passion, and she has spent the last decade mastering her craft: landscape art, portraits, and depictions of the natural world. Michelle signs her paintings as 'Mies', which is her given name of Dutch origin.
While building a new home in Vernon, BC, Michelle imagined a large painting hanging on the wall next to the fireplace. She met with a local artist who offered space for her to explore her new passion of brush strokes on canvas. She was able to complete the accent painting she had envisioned, and it hangs in its desired spot still today! Investing in art—whether your own or a commissioned piece—transforms a house into a home filled with stories, memories, and inspiration.
All of Michelle's oil paintings are inspired by photographs of portraits, landscapes, flowers and animals. These are then taken and freely estimated onto large canvases (18x24'', 24x36'', etc). The majority of her paintings are commissioned pieces, while others adorn the walls of her family's homes. Send a message via the contact form to buy art or ask about art commissions.
When you step into Michelle's studio you can't help but feel the joyful atmosphere. The abundance of color in all her paintings expresses her joy in painting. From a monochrome photo taken, Michelle enhances the beauty of the subject, with the intention to pull in the viewer and invites them to respond emotionally. You can tell this is her "Happy Place"!
The Studio is located in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada.
